We are once again proud to announce that the evening’s guest band is Avalon Rising – one of the most magical dance bands in on the this or any other world – equally at home playing Victorian ballroom dance music, hauntingly beautiful Celtic and Celtic Fusion, and Medieval-Renaissance rock (Yes, you heard that right!).
We will be dancing waltzes, polkas, schottisches, mazurka waltzes,
reels,
contradances, and other popular couple and set dances of the 19th
century, some elegant Renaissance dances, and even some “music with
rocks in
it,” as the Arch-Chancellor himself describes it. While some of the
dances are
choreographed set dances (which will be taught or called), others are
open to
free-form improvisation (everything from free-style rock to Irish polka
sets
are sometimes done to the same music!).
Fantasy
costumes from the Disc World novels of Terry Pratchett, fantasy
costumes from
any universe, and, of course, magical or wizard costumes are admired,
but not
required. Guests may also come in period costume and still be in style: In the city of Ankh-Morpork, fashions range
from Renaissance to Edwardian, and since the University also has a
budding
computer science department, Victorian steampunk costumes (and gadgets)
are
very appropriate. As always, vintage or modern evening dress is also
welcome.
There will (of course!) be a no-host bar and a light snack buffet (We know very well how seriously the Faculty of Unseen University take their meals, and your potluck contributions to the buffet are most welcome!).
